Mistake or First Choice

Posted by Jon McNeel on

“After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’” Acts 13:22 (NIV)

Sometimes I wake up in the morning feeling a little overwhelmed. I just fixed the car and the truck won’t start. I paid the cell phone bill but forgot the water bill. I scheduled two appointments for the same night and both people are now upset. And I never have time to get everything done.  I find myself asking the question… Am I the right person for this job?

So before I start any day, I get alone with Jesus. I read the Bible and pray to my Lord because I know it is very likely that I will face another one of those days.  Often when I open the Bible and read the stories, I find it is full of people just like me. People like Noah and Moses and Paul always seem to get the spotlight.  They are the “big ones” that did “big things.”  But Scripture is also filled with ordinary folks who just followed the Lord and God showed up in amazing ways.  Take Gideon for example. He was a man threshing wheat in a wine press so that his enemies would not see him and destroy all his food.  He lived in a time when the Israelites were being oppressed by the Midianites.  When they would plant crops, the Midianites would come through and destroy them.  No crops meant no food and no food meant death.  You can read the story in Judges chapters 6-7.  Gideon and his family lived during difficult times.

Gideon was called by God to lead the children of Israel into battle to defeat the Midianites.  But Gideon asked, “who am I? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh and I am the least in my family.” Gideon’s resume would not have gotten him the job if man was in charge.  But God responded by saying, “I will be with you…”

It does not matter what faces you today at work or at school or at home; when you give yourself to the Lord, He is with you.  Jesus said, “In this life there will be trouble, but take heart, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Gideon certainly understood that his life was filled with difficulty.  And he definitely did not feel like he was qualified to lead an army. However, God ended up using him because God’s glory and power is magnified in our weakness.

You may wonder why God called you to the job you have or the friend group you have or even the family you have, but God is in control and He is with you.  Stand strong in Him and you will stand strong for Him.

Do you ever feel like your situation is more of a mistake than a first choice? Take heart. Not only has Jesus overcome the world, but He picked you to be His number one choice.  And when you let Him lead you, your battles are fought by Him.  You are not in this life alone… HE IS WITH YOU!

So as you read this today, take heart and know that you are His.  When you feel overwhelmed by life or the circumstances you face, talk to Jesus… "Dear Lord, I thank You for the work You are doing in and through my life. I trust that Your will is perfect and that I am where You want me to be.  If not, lead me, use me, direct my path and help me remember that I am Your 'first choice' for the tasks at hand.  I rest in the fact that You chose me and that You are with me. I give myself to You today. In Jesus’ name, Amen."
